During the late 1930's the SS100 was considered by many to be one of the most desireable sports cars of this era. It was one of the first British production cars to exceed 100 m.p.h. and gained considerable success in many European motor rallies.

The SS100 was a British roadster which was built from 1936 to 1940 by SS Cars Ltd . It was also the last model produced before World War II by the company. Due to the highly sensitive cargo that the abbreviation 'SS' carries since the war, the name of the company was changed to Jaguar after the war . In total, 312 of these cars were built with a 2.5 (198) or 3.5 (116) liter engine. The car is a very popular classic that has become very expensive.

The (Y1-3) 1936 Jaguar SS-100 was released in 1977. You will see it in milky-white, steel grey or yellow also dark green, red and steel blue.

Variations/Rarities: The first version has a milky-white body and chassis and is sometimes considered to be a pre-production model. It is distinguishable from the second issue in that only the first version features very small sidelights on the top of the front wings which were enlarged considerably on all later issues. It was only after some complaints from collectors to Lesney Products that the castings were barely recognizable as sidelights, that the manufacturers altered the model.
At the same time Lesney increased the thickness of the numberplate bracing rib to prevent the high percentage of breakages that were appearing on the assembly line.
The Jaguar always had black plastic seats, steering wheel and hood and 12 spoke chromed wheels or finely cast 24 spoke chromed wire wheels.
It had black plastic tyres that may or may not have a whitewall. The folded windscreen frame, grille and headlights were chromed plastic.
The model was recoloured to steel grey which was quickly replaced by steel blue. Halfway through the steel blue issue it was found that the freshly painted castings were sticking to the conveyor belt so five lines (ribs) were cast into the underside of the running boards to raise the casting from the surface.
It was then released in dark green and finally in two distinct shades of yellow before production in the UK came to a halt for the last time.
It was later released in a dark yellow diorama issue which was made in Macau and also a red version that was made in China.

In 1997 the red bodied model was re-run as part of the "Grand Classics Collection".

It is a commonly seen model and does not attract much of a premium. The steel grey versions however are sought after and worth a little more as are milky-white versions with small sidelights.

Note: Issue 16 has painted rivets on baseplate.
